What is shea butter, and how is it produced?

Shea butter has a distinctive rich nutty aroma and a light yellow color. At low temperatures, it is solid but melts easily in your hands with just a few movements. The butter is extracted from the nuts of the African shea tree, also known as the karité or butter tree. Locals consider the tree sacred, and the oil from its nuts has been used for decades to protect the skin from the sun, wind, and dry climate. The tree itself can live up to 200 years and begins to bloom only after 20 years. According to tradition, its fruits are harvested exclusively by women, who then extract the butter from the nuts.

Why do we call shea butter “a superfood for skin and hair”?

Today, shea butter is globally recognized and widespread due to its rich composition of valuable fatty acids, vitamins (A, D, E), and trace elements. It deeply nourishes, protects, supports regeneration processes, and helps restore the structure of the skin and hair. Recommended for mature skin or for dry and damaged skin and hair, organic shea butter helps reduce fine wrinkles, heal minor wounds, and repair skin integrity. Interestingly, it has also been used to soothe insect bites.

How to use shea butter?

Its applications are countless, starting with the most common use – as a nourishing cream for the skin. By melting a small amount in your palms, you can directly use it as a body butter or mix it with coconut oil in a water bath to create a softer blend that you can store in a jar for convenient use. Shea butter is suitable for softening rough skin or healing chapped lips. It can be used for massage or to soothe the skin after prolonged sun exposure. Combined with baking soda and a few drops of essential oil, shea butter can also serve as a cream to combat unpleasant odors from sweating. When used in hair masks, it helps protect against harmful influences, adds shine, and strengthens the hair.
